Somerset Wedding Photographer

Natural, emotive wedding photography across Somerset

As a Somerset wedding photographer, I photograph weddings with a relaxed, unobtrusive approach, creating honest photographs that bring you back to the people, atmosphere and feeling of your day.

My work is rooted in documentary storytelling, with an editorial eye for beautiful light, composition and the small details that help tell the wider story. Rather than turning your wedding into a photoshoot, I want you to be able to experience it properly. To spend time with the people you have brought together, enjoy the celebration you have spent so long planning and trust that the story is being captured as it unfolds.

The result is a wedding gallery that feels natural, considered and completely personal to you. Photographs of the moments you expected alongside all the expressions, interactions and fleeting pieces of family history that happened in between.

I am based close to Bath, on the edge of Somerset, and photograph weddings throughout the county and across the wider South West.

Documentary wedding photography that lets you enjoy your wedding

I believe the best wedding photographs come from giving people the space to be themselves. For most of the day, I work quietly in the background, watching what is happening rather than directing it. I am looking for relationships, expressions and the little threads that develop throughout a wedding day. It might be the person who keeps making everyone laugh. A parent quietly taking everything in. Children creating their own entertainment. Old friends falling immediately back into familiar patterns. Or somebody who hasn’t said very much all day but has had a mischievous glint in their eye since breakfast. These are often the photographs that become increasingly important with time. It also means you don’t need to perform for the camera. You can concentrate on your wedding and the people around you while I concentrate on telling its story.

Relaxed portraits without spending hours away from your guests

Documentary wedding photography doesn’t mean there can’t be beautiful portraits. Most couples still want some photographs together and perhaps a small number of family group photographs. I simply approach them in a way that doesn’t take over the day. We can usually create relaxed couple portraits in around 10 to 15 minutes, using gentle guidance where it is helpful rather than heavily posing you. It gives you a little time alone together and creates some beautiful, considered portraits without disappearing from your wedding for hours.

Group family photographs can also be planned in advance so that they are organised efficiently and everyone can get back to the celebration. The balance is important. You receive the portraits you will want to frame, alongside a much larger body of photographs showing what your wedding actually felt like.

Weddings in Somerset

One of the things I love about photographing weddings in Somerset is the sheer variety of celebrations that take place here. There are elegant country houses and private estates, old stone buildings tucked into the countryside, contemporary spaces, barns, gardens and family homes surrounded by fields. A Somerset wedding can feel wonderfully grand or incredibly intimate, and sometimes both within the same day.

I photograph weddings across Somerset, including around Bath and the Mendips, Frome, Bruton, Castle Cary, Wells, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Taunton and the surrounding countryside.

Being based locally means much of Somerset is within easy reach, and I know the landscape, towns and countryside well. That local knowledge is particularly useful when plans change, the weather isn’t doing what we hoped or we need to find good light without taking you away from your guests for long.

Somerset wedding venues

Somerset is home to some exceptional wedding venues, from relaxed country houses to beautifully restored estates and private celebrations at home.

Venues such as Babington House, Pennard House, Coombe Lodge, Orchardleigh House, Priston Mill and Elmhay Park each offer something very different, which is exactly how I think wedding photography should work too. I respond to the place, the light, the people and what is actually happening.

At a country house wedding that might mean guests spilling out onto the lawn as the evening light changes. At a barn wedding it could be the atmosphere of everyone gathered closely together. At a private home or marquee wedding, the personal details and family connections to the place can become an important part of the story.

Wherever you choose to get married, the venue provides the setting. The people and what happens between them are what make the photographs yours.

Documentary wedding photography with an editorial eye

My approach is predominantly documentary, but I also bring an editorial eye to the way I photograph a wedding. That means paying attention to composition, layers, light, colour and the visual rhythm of the finished gallery while allowing real moments to remain real. I don’t want to manufacture emotion or repeatedly ask you to recreate something that has already happened. Instead, I look for beautiful ways of photographing what is genuinely unfolding in front of me.

When a little direction is useful, particularly during portraits, I will give it. For the rest of the day, I want you to be able to forget about the photography as much as possible. It is a balance between observation and artistry: natural, emotive storytelling photographed with care.

Wedding photographs that become part of your family history

There is an immediate excitement to receiving your wedding photographs, but I also think about what those photographs will mean much further into the future.

A wedding brings together people from different parts of your lives in a way that rarely happens again. Parents, grandparents, siblings, childhood friends and newer friendships are all in the same place for a few hours. That is why I photograph beyond the obvious milestones. The ceremony, confetti, speeches and first dance matter, of course. But so do the conversations happening at the edge of the room, the way somebody looks at you when they think nobody is watching and the chaos unfolding on the dance floor. Over time, those photographs become more than a record of how everything looked. They become part of your family history.

An experienced Somerset wedding photographer

I have been photographing people and celebrations for many years, with an approach shaped by documentary photography and a fascination with human connection. Experience has taught me when to anticipate something before it happens, when a little guidance will help and, just as importantly, when to leave a moment completely alone. Weddings are unpredictable. Timings change, weather changes, emotions run high and rooms don’t always have perfect light. Being able to respond calmly to those situations is an important part of the job. My role isn’t simply to make beautiful photographs. It is to make the photography feel easy for you while consistently creating a thoughtful record of the day.

My work has also been recognised by documentary photography organisations including This is Reportage: Family and the Family Photojournalist Association, and my photography has been featured by PhotoVogue.

What it’s like to have me photograph your wedding

I want the experience to feel calm from the beginning. Before your wedding we will talk through the day, the people who matter to you and anything I need to know. I don’t need an enormous shot list because I will be actively looking for moments throughout the wedding, but knowing the relationships and details that are particularly important to you helps me understand your story.

On the day, I will offer guidance when you need it and disappear into the background when you don’t. You won’t spend your wedding wondering what you are supposed to be doing for photographs. You can simply be there. Laugh with your friends. Hug your parents. Have another glass of champagne. Dance badly. Talk to the people you haven’t seen for years. Your wedding should feel like a wedding, not a photoshoot. My job is to make sure you have the photographs that take you back there afterwards.

Somerset wedding photography collections

I offer wedding photography collections for celebrations of different lengths, from shorter Somerset weddings through to complete storytelling coverage from preparations into the evening.

Every wedding is different, but my approach remains the same: thoughtful preparation beforehand, unobtrusive coverage on the day and a carefully edited gallery that tells the story as a whole rather than simply delivering a collection of disconnected highlights.

For couples who want something tangible to keep, I also offer fine art wedding albums, designed to turn the photographs into something that can be held, shared and passed down through your family.

You can view my wedding photography collections and pricing to see the different levels of coverage available.

Planning a wedding in Somerset?

If you are planning a wedding in Somerset and want photography that allows you to be present with your people rather than spending hours posing for photographs, I would love to hear about it.

You don’t need to know exactly how many photographs you want or have your timeline completely finalised before getting in touch. Tell me where you’re getting married, your wedding date and a little about what you are planning. If my approach feels right for you, we can arrange a relaxed conversation about your wedding and the photography that would suit it best.
