For me, the best photographs aren’t always the ones you planned. They’re the look between two people who know each other inside out. Your dad laughing with an old friend. The child who simply cannot keep still. The squeeze of a hand. The slightly chaotic bits. The quiet ones. The people you love, completely themselves.

Whether I’m photographing a wedding, an afternoon with your family or a room full of people at an event, I work in much the same way. I observe rather than orchestrate, stepping in with gentle guidance when it’s helpful and giving you space when it isn’t.

The result is beautiful, characterful photography that doesn’t make life feel like a photoshoot. I want to photograph not only what it looked like, but what it felt like to be there.

You don’t need to be good at having your photograph taken. In fact, you don’t really need to do very much at all. My photography is rooted in observation rather than performance. I’m always watching for the relationships, expressions, humour and little threads running through what is happening in front of me.

I notice the quieter people as much as the loud ones. The person who doesn’t say much but has a cheeky glint in their eye. The child doing something wonderfully unpredictable. The gestures between people who have known one another for decades. That’s where the story is.

When a little direction would help, I’ll give you gentle guidance. But for most of the time, I want you to forget about the camera and get on with whatever matters to you. The result is photography that feels natural and true to you, while still being thoughtfully and beautifully composed.

And while all of that is happening, I’m looking for the photographs that will eventually become part of your family history.

My low-pressure approach to photography is particularly well suited to children and adults who may find a traditional photoshoot difficult or uncomfortable. I’m a mum of three SEND children myself and have many years of experience photographing children with very different personalities and needs. I understand that real family life doesn’t always cooperate with carefully made plans. There is no expectation for children to sit still, look at the camera, smile on demand or behave in a particular way for photographs. Documentary Photography in Bath

Documentary photography is sometimes misunderstood as simply taking candid photographs. For me, it goes much further than that. It is about paying attention.

Rather than constantly directing what is happening, I observe people and anticipate moments. I look for relationships, expressions, gestures, humour, layers and the things happening at the edge of the obvious action.

At a wedding, that might mean noticing the interaction between two guests while everyone else is watching the speeches.

During a family session, it might be the way your child reaches automatically for your hand.

At an event, it could be the expression that tells the story more effectively than the main action itself.

This is why I don’t want every photograph to be about people looking at my camera. I want you to be able to look through your photographs years from now and remember the people, the atmosphere and how that chapter of your life actually felt.

I have loved taking photographs my whole life and I have been photographing people professionally since 2017, working across Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire and throughout the South West. But awards aren’t what make a photograph valuable. A technically beautiful image means very little if it doesn’t say anything about the people in it. What matters to me is creating photographs that become more important with time. The photograph that makes you laugh because it is so them. The one your children will look at when they’re grown. The expression of somebody you love that instantly brings their personality back to you.

For weddings, these photographs become part of the visual history of two families coming together. For family photography, they preserve a chapter that is constantly changing.

A Local Photographer for Bath and the Surrounding Countryside

Having moved from central Bath about 15 years ago into the countryside, i’m now based in Paulton, between Bath and the Somerset countryside, and regularly work throughout Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire and the wider South West.

Being local means Bath isn’t simply somewhere I travel to for work. I know the city and the surrounding countryside, and the extraordinary variety of settings the area offers. Bath’s Georgian architecture and warm Bath stone can give photographs an elegant, timeless quality, while its quieter streets, green spaces and surrounding countryside can feel completely different.

But I don’t believe a photograph becomes meaningful simply because it has an impressive backdrop. For family photography especially, somewhere connected to your own life will often mean far more in twenty years than a location chosen because it happens to look good on Instagram. Your home, a favourite walk or somewhere you spend time together can be every bit as beautiful because it is part of your family story.

I observe what is happening, anticipate moments and photograph people naturally. For weddings and some other sessions, I combine this with a small amount of gentle direction when it is helpful. The result is a collection of photographs that feels natural while still being carefully and creatively photographed.

What if I don’t like having my photograph taken?

Then we will probably get along very well. You won’t be expected to perform for the camera or know what to do with your hands. I work quietly for much of the time and offer gentle guidance when it is useful. My aim is for the photography to fit around what you’re doing rather than everything stopping for the photography.

Where can we have a family photoshoot in Bath?

Almost anywhere that feels right for your family. We can photograph at home, head out for a favourite walk or spend time somewhere in Bath or the surrounding countryside that you enjoy together. I usually prefer locations with some personal meaning rather than choosing somewhere purely because it is photogenic.

Can our pets be included in our family photography?

Absolutely. Pets are part of family life and are very welcome. Including them can make the photographs feel even more representative of this particular stage of your family’s story.

Do you photograph neurodivergent children and families with SEND?

Yes. My relaxed documentary approach works particularly well for people who find traditional portrait photography uncomfortable. In fact this is a large reason why my work developed into this genre of documentary photography, due to my neurodivergent children and family members and the more I learnt about it the more I fell in love with this realistic yet very artistic way of working. There is no requirement for eye contact, sitting still or smiling for the camera, and I am happy to adapt the session around individual needs.
