Storytelling photography for organisations doing meaningful work

Charity Photography in Bath, Bristol and the South West

The work you do matters. The way it is seen and understood matters too. Through my work in charity photography across Bath, Bristol and the South West, I offer a thoughtful, unobtrusive approach for organisations who want their work represented with honesty, care and depth.

This is not about staged moments or generic imagery.
It is about documenting what is truly there – the people, the relationships, the atmosphere and the small moments that often go unseen but mean everything.

Images that help people connect. Images that reflect the reality of your work. Images that allow your audience to feel something, not just see it.

A documentary approach to photography for charities

My approach is rooted in observation. I work quietly, without directing or interrupting, allowing moments to unfold naturally. This creates imagery that feels genuine and human rather than constructed. For many organisations, especially those supporting vulnerable people, this way of working is not just a stylistic choice. It is essential.

It allows:

  • people to feel at ease rather than observed
  • real interactions to happen without interference
  • your work to be represented with dignity and authenticity

The result is a body of work that feels truthful, respectful and emotionally resonant.

Helping people understand your impact

Strong photography does more than show what you do. It helps people feel it.

Whether you are:

  • applying for funding
  • sharing your work online
  • building trust with supporters
  • or documenting your impact over time

The right imagery gives your audience a clearer, more immediate understanding of your work.

It brings your organisation to life in a way words alone cannot.

This is where considered, documentary-led charity photography becomes so powerful, helping people connect with your work in a way that feels immediate and real.

Experience you can trust

Alongside my photography business, I work within the charity sector as a Fundraising and Marketing Officer. I hold a Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and bring over 20 years of marketing experience, with a focus on the not-for-profit sector since 2012.

I also have experience working with a range of communities, including people with mental health challenges, those isolated in the community, adults and teenagers with learning disabilities and I feel very comfortable working within neurodivergent environments, having grown up in one and now within my own family.

This gives me a clear understanding of:

  • how organisations communicate
  • what funders and stakeholders need to see
  • how imagery is used across campaigns, reports and digital platforms
  • how to work in a way that feels respectful, flexible and appropriate for different needs

Every organisation is different, and I take time to understand what matters most to you before picking up the camera.

Organisations I have worked with

I have had the privilege of working with a range of charities and organisations across the South West, including:

Each organisation has its own way of working and its own story to tell, and I approach every commission with fresh eyes, care and attention.

The kind of work I can create for you

The photography I provide is shaped around your organisation and how you need to use the images.

This may involve documenting events in a natural and unobtrusive way, capturing connection, atmosphere and the relationships between people. It may involve creating storytelling imagery that reflects your day-to-day work and the impact you have within your community.

I have also worked on campaign-focused shoots, creating imagery that supports specific initiatives, as well as photographing products and innovations in a way that still feels human and grounded in real life.

Often, a combination of these approaches works best, resulting in a set of images that can be used across your website, social media, funding applications and wider communications.

Environmental portraits that connect

Alongside documentary coverage, I often recommend capturing a small number of environmental portraits. These are natural, unforced portraits of people within their own environment, gently observed rather than heavily directed. They can be incredibly powerful.

A single, well-observed portrait can:

  • create an immediate emotional connection
  • draw the viewer into your work
  • give a face to the stories you are sharing

When approached with care and sensitivity, these images sit beautifully alongside documentary moments, adding depth and helping your audience engage more fully.

A calm and considered presence

Being photographed can feel exposing, particularly in environments where people may already feel vulnerable.

I am often told that I bring a calm, steady presence.
An approach that allows people to relax, be themselves and forget the camera is there.

I take care to:

  • work at a pace that suits your environment
  • respect boundaries at all times
  • communicate clearly with staff and participants
  • prioritise comfort over capturing any single image

This creates space for natural moments to emerge, which is where the most meaningful photographs are found.

What I photograph for charities and organisations

Each organisation is different, but I typically document:

  • Day-to-day activity and behind-the-scenes work
  • Workshops, sessions and group interactions
  • One-to-one support in a respectful and unobtrusive way
  • Events and community gatherings
  • Environmental portraits where appropriate

All coverage is approached with discretion and care, adapting to your environment and the people you support.

Based in the South West, working across Bath, Bristol and beyond

I am based between Bath and Bristol and regularly work across Somerset, Wiltshire and the wider South West. I am also available to travel where needed.

A considered approach from start to finish

Before any photography takes place, I take time to understand:

  • your organisation and its values
  • the purpose of the images
  • any sensitivities or safeguarding considerations
  • how and where the images will be used

This ensures the work is aligned with your goals and handled in a way that feels appropriate for everyone involved.

Why work with me

Choosing someone to document your work is about more than just the images. It is about trust, understanding and the way the work is carried out.

My approach brings together:

  • a documentary style that captures real moments with honesty and care
  • extensive marketing experience, ensuring imagery works not just creatively but strategically
  • first-hand understanding of the not-for-profit sector and how visual storytelling supports it
  • a calm, unobtrusive presence that allows people to feel at ease
  • experience working across a range of communities, including neurodivergent environments and individuals with additional needs

The result is photography that feels considered, respectful and genuinely reflective of your work.

Thoughtful, honest photography, created with care and intention.
