Documentary Family Photographer in Somerset

One of my favourite things is to photograph a family in their own surroundings, where they feel most comfortable. This is where the magic happens, as it’s so easy for them to forget that the camera is there at all. Children and parents alike just focus on each other and get on with what they would be doing if I wasn’t there – playing together, laughing together, getting ready for the day, having messy snacks. Every moment of your day is amazing, and photograph worthy, because one day it will all be different and you will long to get these moments back.

I had a shoot in Frome last year with an amazingly wonderful family, who felt like long-lost friends right away. They had just welcomed their third child into the family and they wanted some images to remember this time, with three small people, one particularly new. We had fun simply hanging around in their home, chatting about the new baby, had a little potter into their garden to eat carrots (!) and then back inside again to play with magic wands and pick ice off of the freezer drawers and eat it (a favourite hobby apparently). I was able to capture some beautiful moments with the family – the baby, her siblings,  as well as the family cats.  The joy and love in the family was just wonderful to be part of.

Here are a few of my favourites below, in no particular order..

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas do you cover?

I work across Bath, Bristol, Somerset and the surrounding areas. I can also travel further afield on occasion. If you would like a family photo shoot do get in touch to discuss what is possible.

What is documentary family photography anyway?

Documentary photography, reportage photography, candid photography are all similar phrases to describe a style of photography where the photographer does not direct or interfere with the scene or subjects in front of them. Props are not used, things are not moved out of the way, life is simply captured in its natural state, resulting in beautiful, authentic and very real photographs. Read more here.

Do you take any posed photos at all?

I can do on request. Some clients like to start the shoot with a small handful of posed group shots / portraits for the mantelpiece, before relaxing into the rest of the photo shoot.
