Family Storytelling Photographer Bath: House Move

Documentary Family Photographer in Bath and Bristol

As a family storytelling photographer, I was contacted recently by a family who were going to be moving house and the client really wanted to preserve memories for his children, of their childhood home where they had grown since babyhood. We worked together to identify what was important to him in this shoot and we agreed on a few sessions, telling the story of the transition: before moving, the day of the move and once settled into  the new house. It was quite an emotional family life event to capture, but one which will provide the family with precious memories for years to come. Happily the client was really pleased with the outcome and so were his children. I loved how the client had thought to record this time in the life of his family and provide them with such important and lasting memories.

Here are a few of my favourite images from the shoot, ending with the slideshow of their highlights – showing the transition from their old home to their new one.

As a documentary family photographer, my way of working during family photography sessions is to spend time with a family, find the beauty in their everyday moments, connect with the emotion or the feelings of the events that unfold in front of the camera and do so in a very unobtrusive and unstaged way. The aim is not to capture “pretty” pictures, but images that make the client feel something every time they look at them – images that take them back to those moments in time, to treasure forever. When I’m photographing a particular event, or project, like this house move, I simply apply the same way of working and create a bank of images which illustrate the larger story. Of course, it’s not necessary to wait for a life event to be coming up in order to hire a Family Storytelling Photographer / Documentary Family Photographer, because your everyday family routines and activities are more than enough and are often the most treasured images when looking back. It was fun though to get my teeth stuck into a larger narrative during this series of shoots and the client was over the moon with the results!
